Tunisia Hosts ALECSO Conference to Spotlight Educational Abuses Marring Palestinian Children

Tunis, September 14, 2026 : The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) held a conference on Monday on Palestinian childhood, aimed at discussing the impact of Israeli occupation's actions, monitoring educational and cultural violations, and strengthening protection and resilience mechanisms.

Two-Day Event Draws Experts, Ambassadors

The two-day event has brought together a broad range of experts, academics, and Arab and foreign ambassadors accredited to Tunisia.

ALECSO Director Stresses Human Dimension of Crisis

Addressing the inaugural session, ALECSO Director-General Mohamed Ould Amar said that discussing Palestinian childhood is not merely about numbers or statistics, but about children who have names, dreams, and ambitions — a generation entitled to grow up in a safe environment, free from fear, violence, and deprivation.

Educational, Cultural Systems Suffer Severe Damage

Ould Amar said the Palestinian territories, particularly the Gaza Strip, have witnessed devastating developments that have caused severe damage to the educational and cultural system, affecting children, schools, and cultural institutions.

Arab, International Community Urged to Act

He added that the fallout from these events has placed a significant moral, humanitarian, and legal obligation on the Arab and international community to protect Palestinian children, safeguard their right to education, and preserve their cultural memory.

ALECSO Pledges Continued Support

Working in coordination with the State of Palestine, Arab nations, and regional and international partners, Ould Amar said ALECSO will continue supporting the continuity of education, help protect educational and cultural institutions, and strengthen the resilience of Palestinian children, teachers, and families.

Conference Aims to Advance Protection Mechanisms

The conference seeks to highlight the educational, cultural, legal, mental health, and media dimensions of the abuses facing Palestinian children, while enhancing coordination among Palestinian, Arab, and international institutions working on education, culture, and child rights. It also aims to create an Arab platform for dialogue and expertise exchange, and to help shift efforts from monitoring and documenting violations toward stronger protection and advocacy mechanisms, while addressing learning loss and ensuring continuity of education.
